Awesome Interior Painting Tips

A fresh coat of paint is the best way to bring life back into any room. Painting a room isn’t too difficult either, but you can’t just open up a fresh coat of paint and get started. There are a few universal tips that even professionals like us use any time we do a job. It comes down to using the right tools, adequate prep time, mixing thoroughly, and more. Here are five tips that will make your paint last for years!

● Quality Products: Don’t just go for any paint brand you can find. Low-quality paints won’t last nearly as long as the higher quality. It will be more watery, taking several coats to cover the walls adequately. A high-quality paint will last for years as opposed to the lower quality paint, which you’ll have to redo a year later anyway.

◦ Painter’s Tape: Painter’s tape ensures that when you pull it off the wall, there will be no damage done underneath. Masking tape or any other kind of tape gives too much leeway for the paint to get under the tape.

◦ Drop Cloths: Bedsheets are far too thin to keep any spilled paint from soaking through, leading to damage on the carpet or hardwood floors. Drop cloths are a much thicker material that can catch the drips and spills without ruining the surface underneath.

● Mix Thoroughly: Even though you get the same color from the store, that doesn’t guarantee the shade is going to be exact. If you paint from two different cans, you will notice the difference. To avoid this, mix all of the paint cans in a larger container before you start painting.

● Remove Outlet Covers: Taping all of the outlet covers can be a waste of time and doesn’t always protect it. It’s better to remove the covers and paint underneath for a smooth, crisp line. Even if you did want the outlet covers the same, remove them and paint them separately.

● Prep Time Is Just As Important: You just got back from the paint store, and you’re itching to get that new color on the walls. Do not jump into your paint job before properly prepping the walls! When you skip the prep, your walls will suffer for it, and the paint won’t come out as nicely as it could. To prep, any chipped or peeling paint needs to be sanded smooth, and your walls need to be cleaned. Dirty walls will cause the paint not to stick correctly, forcing you to repaint it multiple times before you get any results.

New Year, New Rooms!

The new year is a time for a fresh start. It’s an excellent opportunity to upgrade your home to a more modern look, or to change your overall theme. Whether you’re interested in updating one room, or your home completely, here are a few ideas that we love.

What to Paint for the New Year?

Accent Walls: Sometimes all a room needs is new color, but you may not want to paint the entire room. By adding an accent wall, you provide a pop of color, without adding too much. Surprisingly, this one accent wall can either brighten or darken the room, whichever you prefer. You could also use this opportunity to have a “test run” of a color you might want to use later on.

Kitchen Cabinets: A great way to change up your kitchen, without a full remodel, is to add a fresh coat of paint to all of your kitchen cabinets.

Family Room: Adding a new color to the living or family room can really brighten up the house and gives it a cozy feel. You can cater your new color to whatever your family enjoys the most. Bright colors let in as much light as possible, or you can use darker colors to have the perfect movie nights.

What Colors Should You Use?

White, Grey, or Beige: Theses are neutral colors that can complement any room and can tie together any style of furniture.

- A color that’s mentioned a lot in the neutrals is greige which is a combination of grey and beige.

Navy Blue: This a great color for bedrooms because it’s a dark color promoting a good night’s sleep. You’ll also find it used in bathrooms to compliment a white or marble in the room.

Red: This is great for an accent wall in the kitchen. Red promotes good appetite and great conversation.

Light Green: A light green can give your bathroom and earthly, calming tone especially paired with white accents. Perfect for that spa day.

Some Extra Tips For You New Style:

Make sure the color matches the furniture and decor of the room.

Choose a color that can last and doesn’t tend to go out of style. The crazier the color, the more likely you’ll change it more often.

Want to open up your room? Go with bright or neutral colors that can reflect that light.

Cleaning your home’s exterior is a necessary part of home ownership. This process is exceptionally important if you’re planning on painting the outside of your home with a vibrant new color. Whether you’re planning a new paint job or just looking to remove the years of built up dirt and decay, there are a few things to know about exterior washing. While it seems like a simple task, it’s easier said than done, and better left to the experts. Here’s everything you should know about cleaning your home with pressure washing, power washing or soft washing.

What’s the difference?

Power Washing uses high pressure with hot water. This helps sanitize surfaces and breaks down organic materials such as dirt. It’s not recommended for material such as wood. It should be strictly used on driveways, rough concrete, etc.
Pressure Washing is still a high pressure but it can use any temperature of the water. It can be used on surfaces like patio furniture, stone pathways, decks, and more.
- Note: Both of these can be very dangerous and can cause injuries when used incorrectly.
Soft Washing is a lot gentler than the two listed above. The tip is more widespread so it doesn’t have as high a pressure. It can be used on a lot more materials such as vinyl siding, wood panel siding, screens, enclosures, stucco, and more.

Now that you’ve hired a professional to paint your home, your job is almost done. The next step for you is to prepare your home so that it is ready for painting. While it’s important to ensure there aren’t any obstacles or potential hazards, in the way, here are a few helpful tips for a smooth paint job:

Exterior Paint Jobs

It’s best to remove any shutters, hanging plants, patio furniture, and more on the outside of the house. Trim away any trees or bushes so the painters have plenty of room to finish the entire house.

Make sure your pets can’t get in the way of the painters. A professional paint job can be hazardous to both the painters and your pets if they are loose outside your home. Kennel them for the day, or keep them inside your home for the duration of the paint job.

Hose down as much dirt as possible. The painters will usually powerwash your siding to make sure they have a clean slate, but hosing down the siding, and the trim, is extremely helpful to their process, especially if there’s any leftover landscaping mess.

Interior Paint Jobs

It’s best to take down any wall-hanging decor, rid of the cobwebs, put away any rugs, and any furniture that can be removed easily. If you have a piece of furniture that isn’t easy to move, then cover it with an old sheet or something you don’t mind getting a little messy.

Animals can be very sensitive to paint fumes. It’s best to remove them for however long it takes the painters, or make sure they are in a well-ventilated area, as far away from the fumes as possible.

With a small amount of laundry detergent and a gallon of water, walls can be scrubbed clean with a clean rag or a sponge. It might take some elbow grease, but it’ll be worth it when the room is that gorgeous new color!

Set the Mood! – Setting the mood with some darker, moody colors like navy blue and brown can give any room that comfy, cozy feel. It’s more common in living rooms because people want to decompress after a long day of work and running around. Adding a light color to offset the darker colors can make a beautiful contrast, by painting the trim or by adding a lighter decor to offset the dark. Plus: using a darker blue in the bedroom helps induce sleep.

Greens & Blues – A great combination for a room is a soft blue such as a baby blue and a grass green. These are soft colors great to keep things both cozy as well as light and airy.

Adding a Pattern – A wall doesn’t need to just be painted the traditional way and left like that. Patterns can be added free hand, with a stencil, and more! It can turn a drab boring color to a unique part of the house that will keep people talking.

Accent wall – Creating an accent wall with a fun pattern, or color, breaks up the room to make it appear more open. It adds a little extra to your space to bring together your unique style and decor.

This Is What Happens When NAP Sneaks Into Hospitality House…

Sometime shortly after Christmas, Knox County Homeless Coalition/Hospitality House Executive Director Stephanie Primm recalls a delightful discovery.

“We recently just finished our Welcome Center, renovated by Habitat for Humanity, which was the garage attached to Hospitality House. This is a brand new intake and Welcome Center, which has two private meeting rooms, a laundry facility, a bathroom with a shower and a front desk. Now having that Welcome Center finished has improved the quality of our services and allows us to give better service to families needing attention and the start of Case Management.”

“So, Peter, [owner of North Atlantic Painting] snuck in two crew members without me even realizing it over a weekend and painted the whole thing in six hours,” she said. “It was so under the radar. He had threatened to help us and got Habitat For Humanity to arrange it, then just showed up and did it. It is only because of Peter and so many in our community that we have been able to help the hundreds of homeless families here in the Midcoast.”

The new Welcome Center now has a fresh coat of off-white paint throughout to lend a calming feeling to the rooms. “He took care of it and it was just really sweet,” said Primm. “In addition, this new space allows us to provide families living in Hospitality House more privacy and comfort. People in desperate situations can come in, get a shower and do their laundry. When they are feeling taken care of then we can have a conversation in the meeting room about how to help them.”

Not only does the Welcome Center take care of clients’ immediate comfort needs, but there is also a “store” within Hospitality House’s barn that allows people to choose (for free) from among various donated items such as food, warm coats and boots, job interview clothing, and household items.
